[00:06:16] Which is why it irritates me so much that these people have operated within the Church with impunity for decades.

[00:06:26] So for those of you unfamiliar with what the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints teaches, we have a very strict rule called the law of chastity.

[00:06:35] And it says that unless you are legally married to a biological female or male, you cannot engage in sexual intercourse.

[00:06:46] It's the only appropriate context in which sex can take place.

[00:06:51] And so what is described in the Hamlin victim statements is a blatant violation of the law of chastity.

[00:06:58] Not to mention virtually every doctrinal position that the Church holds.

[00:07:04] And we'll get into that here shortly.

[00:07:08] So this is origins of ritual abuse within the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

[00:07:14] It's 10 times, and that's a reference to the number of times that David Lee Hamlin could have been arrested, charged, and convicted before the current two criminal cases against him in American Fork, Utah, and Manti, Utah.

[00:07:31] So I want to talk about history as light and antidote.

[00:07:35] As Latter-day Saints, we have a bit of a tortured relationship with our history.

[00:07:40] There's the official version, which focuses on those aspects of church history that are edifying and uplifting.

[00:07:47] And there's the academic version, which critiques the official version, sometimes harshly.

[00:07:54] There's the plain language of the Book of Mormon and the 1832 Book of Commandments, as well as the evolution of the Book of Commandments into the 1835 Doctrine and Covenants and subsequent editions.

[00:08:06] And then there are voluminous records of sermons and general conferences.

[00:10:05] So we have pretty voluminous records as Latter-day Saints of any sermon that was preached at General Conference.

[00:10:13] And they're so voluminous that censorship is pretty difficult.

[00:10:18] They're contained in volumes called the Journal of Discourses.

[00:10:22] So those are all online.

[00:10:24] You can see virtually every sermon or address that was delivered at a General Conference, which is twice the early conference that we have, dating back to the beginning of the church.

[00:10:35] And then there are the firsthand accounts of church history from the journals of those who were there.

[00:10:40] That is, saints who attended addresses that may not appear in the Journal of Discourses because they weren't part of like General Conference.

[00:10:49] But there's a record of them from the people who attended that church service.

[00:10:54] And somewhere in the midst of all of these records is the truth.

[00:10:59] And that's what we strive to get at as Latter-day Saints.

[00:11:04] And also, I would assume, as historians.

[00:11:08] So I want to go over what I consider to be a very extraordinary statement during an extraordinary time in the church's history.

[00:11:16] And it comes from Brigham Young.

[00:11:18] Now, the church in 1852 came out and publicly acknowledged that they had a doctrine of plural marriage.

[00:11:27] They also began to publicly acknowledge other doctrines, such as the sealing ordinance and the law of adoption,

[00:11:35] which stated that Latter-day Saints could be sealed to each other in temples for all of eternity.

[00:11:43] So families could be sealed together.

[00:11:46] Families are eternal in the Latter-day Saints belief system.

[00:11:51] And so the sealing ordinance is how we do that.

[00:11:56] But there was also something called the law of adoption.

[00:11:59] And you could be adopted as a Latter-day Saint into the family of Joseph Smith or Brigham Young or someone else.

[00:12:08] And the reason that was important was because many of the saints at the time did not have parents or families who had been Latter-day Saints.

[00:12:18] And what we believe about the hierarchy of the celestial kingdom is that Latter-day Saints must be sealed to each other in an unbroken chain back to Adam to complete the final dispensation.

[00:12:33] That's why we're called Latter Days.

[00:12:35] These are the last days.

[00:12:38] And so Brigham Young in 1862 was addressing the congregation at General Conference.

[00:12:46] And he made this statement.

[00:12:48] I will refer here to a principle that has been not named by me for years.

[00:12:52] With the introduction of the priesthood upon the earth was also introduced the sealing ordinance,

[00:12:57] that the chain of the priesthood from Adam to the latest generation might be united in one unbroken continuance.

[00:13:03] It is the same power and the same keys that Elijah held and was to exercise in the last days.

[00:13:10] Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord.

[00:13:15] And he shall turn the hearts of the fathers to the children and the hearts of the children to their fathers,

[00:13:20] lest I come and smite the earth with a curse.

[00:13:23] By this power, men will be sealed back to Adam,

[00:13:26] completing and making perfect the chain of the priesthood from his day to the winding up scene.

[00:13:32] I have known men that I positively think would fellowship the devil if he would agree to be sealed to them.

[00:13:39] Oh, be sealed to me, brother.

[00:13:41] I care not what you do.

[00:13:42] You may lie and steal or anything else.

[00:13:44] I can put up with all your meanness if only you will be sealed to me.

[00:13:48] Now this is not so much weakness as it is selfishness.

[00:13:52] It is a great and glorious doctrine,

[00:13:53] but the reason I have not preached it in the midst of this people is

[00:13:56] I could not do it without turning so many of them to the devil.

[00:14:01] Some would go to hell for the sake of getting the devil sealed to them.

[00:14:05] That is an absolutely astonishing statement.

[00:14:09] For the prophets, seer and revelator of the church to be making to an audience of Latter-day Saints.

[00:14:18] In this statement, Brigham Young is saying the reason he can't teach about the sealing ordinance,

[00:14:26] and he hasn't taught for years,

[00:14:29] is because there are Latter-day Saints who would take the sealing ordinance

[00:14:34] and pervert it in order to seal themselves to the devil.

[00:14:40] Now he wouldn't have said that if he didn't have a good reason to believe that that was the case.

[00:14:47] And so that's evidence that there was something amiss in the earliest days of the church

[00:14:52] by the time of Brigham Young in the mid-1840s that he was aware of

[00:14:58] and that he had been careful about preaching about the sealing ordinance

[00:15:03] and the law of adoption to these saints

[00:15:05] because these saints saw that ordinance as a catapult to power.

[00:15:10] So not only could you be sealed into the family of a prominent Latter-day Saint like Joseph Smith

[00:15:16] or be sealed to Brigham Young,

[00:15:19] theoretically these saints believed that they could be sealed to Lucifer, the devil.

[00:15:25] And in doing so, they could obtain power.

[00:15:28] And we're going to see as we go on that is central to what the LDS Church of Satan taught

[00:15:33] to its children in the Hamlin victim statements.

[00:15:39] Interesting.

[00:15:40] You have that extraordinary statement,

[00:15:42] but in the 1852 sermon publicly announcing the church's doctrine on plural marriage,

[00:15:47] Orson Pratt taught the purpose of plural marriage.

[00:15:51] He said that Latter-day Saints believe in preexistence,

[00:15:54] whereas the religions of the, quote, Christian world did not believe in preexistence.

[00:16:00] So we believe that each of us are premortal spirits

[00:16:04] who exist before we come to earth and inhabit a body.

[00:16:09] So Orson Pratt stated that the spirits inhabiting the body of his audience

[00:16:13] were more than a thousand years old

[00:16:15] and some were more than 5,000 years old

[00:16:18] because the spirit predates the body.

[00:16:20] Pratt cited the book of Abraham

[00:16:22] and cited that there were some premortal spirits

[00:16:25] of greater nobility and intelligence than others.

[00:16:30] These elite premortal spirits were held back for the final dispensation

[00:16:34] and through noble parentage and plural marriage,

[00:16:37] they were to be born to learn the truths of eternity

[00:16:39] in order to become prophet kings and priests to the Most High God.

[00:17:19] These elite premortal spirits were held back for the final dispensation

[00:17:23] and through noble parentage and plural marriage,

[00:17:26] born to Latter-day Saints,

[00:17:29] they were going to be born to learn the truths of eternity

[00:17:32] in order to become prophets, kings, and priests to the Most High God.

[00:17:37] We as Latter-day Saints believe

[00:17:40] that we will undergo exaltation,

[00:17:43] that if we receive the atonement,

[00:17:45] that is salvation through Jesus Christ,

[00:17:48] and we perform the ordinances through the priesthood

[00:17:51] that we believe was restored to Joseph Smith,

[00:17:55] that not only will we be sealed to our families for all eternity

[00:17:59] in the celestial or highest level of heaven,

[00:18:04] we believe that we will undergo exaltations

[00:18:08] and become gods ourselves.

[00:18:10] So these premortals were in waiting for 6,000 years.

[00:18:16] And with the restoration of the priesthood,

[00:18:18] the fullness of times was upon the earth.

[00:18:20] So when Joseph Smith received the Book of Mormon

[00:18:22] and translated it,

[00:18:24] and it reestablished the church,

[00:18:27] or restored the church,

[00:18:30] God's chosen and faithful servants,

[00:18:32] the elites of the Latter-day Saints,

[00:18:35] the most faithful,

[00:18:37] would enter into plural marriage

[00:18:38] to give birth to the Great Ones,

[00:18:41] the elite premortal spirits,

[00:18:44] and exaltation would be achieved

[00:18:45] for all who partook of plural marriage.

[00:18:48] Those who did not undergo plural marriage,

[00:18:52] did not enter into it,

[00:18:54] would be angels,

[00:18:56] and they would be unable to multiply their posterity

[00:18:59] in the celestial kingdom.

[00:19:01] So as Latter-day Saints,

[00:19:03] we believe that the purpose of undergoing exaltation

[00:19:06] is that we will populate future worlds and planets

[00:19:11] that we ourselves will produce

[00:19:14] quote-unquote premortal spirit children.

[00:19:17] And so these elite premortals,

[00:19:23] the most noble and intelligent of Heavenly Fathers'

[00:19:26] premortal offspring,

[00:19:27] were held back until the final dispensation

[00:19:30] in the latter days.

[00:19:32] Only the most righteous saints,

[00:19:34] those who entered into marriage for eternity

[00:19:36] through plural marriage,

[00:19:39] would undergo exaltation.

[00:19:42] In order to enter into plural marriage,

[00:19:45] one would need to recommend from the presidency

[00:19:47] or the quorum of the Twelve.

[00:19:49] That would be the top 15 members

[00:19:52] or the top 15 officers

[00:19:54] of the Church of Jesus Christ

[00:19:55] for Latter-day Saints.

[00:19:57] Now historically,

[00:19:58] no more than 28% of saints

[00:20:00] ever practiced plural marriage.

[00:20:03] It was very much a practice reserved

[00:20:07] for the elite of the elites within the Church.

[00:20:10] So under a third of saints

[00:20:12] ever had more than one wife

[00:20:15] or more the wives of a man

[00:20:19] who was a polygamist.

[00:20:22] That's interesting.

[00:20:23] I never knew that.

[00:20:25] Mm-hmm.

[00:20:26] It's something that was,

[00:20:28] it would be mathematically impossible

[00:20:30] because men outnumbered women

[00:20:32] in the early days of the Church.

[00:20:35] Yeah.

[00:20:37] So it was not possible

[00:20:39] for every Latter-day Saint male

[00:20:40] to have multiple wives.

[00:20:44] And only those males

[00:20:46] who obtain a recommends

[00:20:48] from the president of the Church,

[00:20:52] a member of the First Presidency

[00:20:54] or an authorized member

[00:20:55] of the Quorum of the Twelve

[00:20:56] could go to the temple

[00:20:58] and be sealed to a second or a third wife.

[00:21:02] Now the sealing power

[00:21:05] was important.

[00:21:06] That's what Brigham Young

[00:21:07] was referencing

[00:21:09] is that when the priesthood

[00:21:10] was restored,

[00:21:11] the sealing ordinance

[00:21:12] was also restored.

[00:21:14] And through the law of adoption,

[00:21:16] saints were to be sealed

[00:21:17] back to Adam

[00:21:18] in order to enable

[00:21:20] the fullness of times.

[00:21:21] So the final dispensation

[00:21:23] was to be completed

[00:21:24] through the priesthood

[00:21:25] and through the sealing ordinance.

[00:21:27] Men and women

[00:21:28] could be married for eternity.

[00:21:30] Families could be sealed

[00:21:32] together for eternity.

[00:21:33] And the priesthood

[00:21:35] could be sealed

[00:21:35] man to man

[00:21:36] all the way back to Adam.

[00:21:39] the final dispensation

[00:21:41] would not be able

[00:21:42] to be completed

[00:21:45] if those sealings

[00:21:46] were not completed.
